Know the Snow | MEC Calgary

Avalanche Canada is hosting a special screening of The Way Out, the latest ski film from Matchstick Productions. Known for their breathtaking cinematography, cutting-edge riding, and legendary storytelling, Matchstick’s 2026 release promises to deliver high-octane action, deep snow, and unforgettable moments from the world’s best skiers.

Matchstick Productions returns with their 34th annual ski film, The Way Out, a raw tribute to the timeless culture and lifestyle of skiing. It drops you straight into heavy Alaskan spine lines, deep Japanese powder, and iconic Swiss villages. This film shows skiing as far more than a sport; it's a path toward total freedom. From legendary veterans to rising breakout talent, the message is simple: the soul of skiing isn't dead; it's waiting wherever snow falls. Much of it was shot close to home. Whistler, the CMH Monashees Lodge, Mike Wiegele Heli-Skiing, and Northern Escape out of Terrace all feature in the film.

This screening is presented by Cohaesive Garment Technology. Their support is what makes the evening possible, and the first 100 guests through the door will receive a Cohaesive garment repair kit.

Thank you to House of Lager for donating their space for the night.

Ages: All ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Bar: Cash bar on site. Valid ID required.

Avalanche Canada presents a special screening of Actually, It Is Rocket Science, the newest chapter in the annual ski film from Teton Gravity Research. Known for their breathtaking cinematography, cutting-edge riding, and legendary storytelling, TGR's 2026 release promises to deliver high-octane action, deep snow, and unforgettable moments from the world's best skiers.

Actually, It Is Rocket Science is the newest chapter in TGR's ongoing study of the fall line. Featuring Bute Inlet, British Columbia; Haines, Alaska; Japan; Finland; Andorra; Montana; Jay Peak, Vermont; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the film follows the world's best skiers as they turn each mountain into a laboratory and every descent into an experiment. Athletes explore the intricacies of dissecting a big mountain line, the physics and amplitude of a massive gap, calculating transition, and the force of gravity. So, is it rocket science, or is it not? Watch closely and decide for yourself.

artsPlace is all ages, so bring the kids if they are old enough to sit through a ski movie. Minors need an adult with them.

Wed. Oct. 28: Recognizing Avalanche Terrain and Trip Preparedness. Are you new to the backcountry or looking for a refresher? We focus on the basics of avalanche terrain, how to recognize and avoid avalanche terrain, what equipment is needed and what resources are available. Join our Avalanche Canada forecaster to decipher the nuances of terrain, recognize hazards and help you safely route-find on your adventures this season. We will also cover trip planning and preparedness with a presentation from BC AdventureSmart. Sponsored by EVR.

Wed. Nov. 4: Companion Rescue Bootcamp - Transforming Training. Let’s be honest, most of us don’t practice companion rescue as much as we should. When we do, it’s often a quick transceiver search in a parking lot that feels more like ticking a box than building real skills. Join an Avalanche Canada Lead Field Technician/Avalanche Forecaster, to learn how to turn not-so-perfect practice into high-quality training that’s fun, realistic, efficient, and builds your skills for when it counts. Pros practice every season. If you travel in avalanche terrain, you should too. Sponsored by EVR.
